Every MediSpeech user has their own views on what it is like to work with speech technology. They all mention different advantages for their specific situation. We asked some of the hospital departments that use MediSpeech what they thought of the program. This is what they have to say. Revolutionzize the way you work Gail Powell, Project Lead, NHS Trust, Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust, Great Western Hospital, “The Radiology and Pathology departments have purchased G2 Speech which is going to be commissioned imminently. In the interim we have been using the Digital Dictation element of the product. It has really revolutionised the way we work. Due to the work lists, the workload can be monitored and managed so much more effectively. It gave us the opportunity to review working practices of the secretaries and enabled them to work more as a team, pooling their work. It has been such a success that it is being rolled out through the rest of the Trust. Already there is cross sharing of workloads in different departments which has resolved backlog of tapes in certain areas. All of the users would not turn back to the old system”. “Great company, great product!” Get the report quicker Kay James, Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust, Ultrasound Service Manager, Neville Hall Hospital.
“The Trust has installed G2 Voice Recognition for sonographers reporting. This system has speeded up sonographers reporting, especially for in-patient where reports are created and validated at the end of the Ultrasound examination. The report is then available and appears on ward Clinical Workstations within minutes of the patient returning to the ward. It also has the benefit of reducing secretarial input and allows reporting and validation to take place on satellite sites where sonographers do not have secretarial support.” An invaluable tool for revolutionising the secretarial service within the Trust. Denise Patterson, Senior Secretary, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust, Orthopaedic Unit, Wansbeck General Hospital. “Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust consists of 3 base hospitals and 6 small satellite hospitals. Orthopaedic consultants visit many sites to both operate and hold outpatient clinics. Prior to G2 they had a designated secretary at each site. Since the implementation of G2 within the Orthopaedic Unit at Wansbeck General Hospital we have centralised the consultant’s workflow to the main base site secretaries. This ensures that the secretary has a true and accurate picture of their consultant’s practice which is much more effective for patient care. Operation notes are often corrected and placed into the patients medical notes before they leave the recovery room. Without MediSpeech this would have been impossible. The secretary spends much less time transcribing the reports than typing enabling her to devote more time to organising the consultant’s diaries. The system is invaluable in overseeing the flow of the work within the unit. Problem areas soon become apparent which enables the team to assist colleagues when necessary without leaving their office or being asked to do so. We work much closer now as a team. G2 has had a dramatic effect on the way we are working and as a team we know this is only the beginning, we are looking forward to dramatically changing our working practices for the benefit of all patients.“
Get the report out within 24 hours! Gelderse Vallei Hospital, Nuclear Medicine and Radiology Departments, The Netherlands The department uses MediSpeech for reporting purposes. Not so long ago, there was sometimes a two-week backlog of about two thousand reports. The backlog has now been cleared by using MediSpeech, and reports are now available within 24 hours. A major improvement! The radiologist records his report, which is then corrected if necessary by the administrative staff. The corrections are inputted into the system, thus achieving an accuracy of 98%, which is excellent. GPs also share in the benefits of speech recognition Gelderland Hospitals, Radiology, The Netherlands Patients at hospitals making up the Gelderland Hospitals group can now hear the results of their X-rays much faster. In the past, it could take up to three weeks before their GP got the results. With the introduction of digital imaging and speech recognition at the hospitals, the delay has been reduced to only five working days. The new system converts a recorded report into a digital text file, which also cuts down on the time it takes for the report to reach the GP.
Much faster reports Leiden University Medical Centre, Pathology and Radiology departments, The Netherlands It’s speeded up our reporting procedures. Speech recognition makes it all a lot quicker.
Medical terminology recognised extremely accurately North Gooi Hospital, Pathology and Radiology, The Netherlands We’re very happy with MediSpeech – it means an enormous time saving. The computer now has a correct recognition rate of 98%. Most of the errors involve common words, but medical terminology is recognised extremely accurately. That means that the number of corrections is very small.
We no longer need to search through the tape St. Augustinus hospital, Radiology, Wilrijk, Belgium Doctor Mark Pouillon, radiologist at the Sint-Augustinus teaching hospital in Wilrijk is very positive about MediSpeech: “The reports are now dealt with much more quickly. In view of the fact that the number of case reports is increasing by about 5% a year MediSpeech is a great solution; there is no need for example to search for dictations on a tape. Thanks to the digital reports, it is now easy to respond quickly and adequately.” It’s easy to add an extra finding to the dictation OLV hospital, Radiology ,Asse, Belgium Doctor Cassiman is very happy with MediSpeech. He has been working with the product for a number of years and would not want to be without it. “Working with MediSpeech is considerably more efficient, consequently more time is available for other tasks. Another advantage is that with MediSpeech you can add extra comments to a dictation, so that it is possible, after further consultation for example, to add these extra findings.” We can now transcribe the dictation ourselves AZ Sint-Jan, Pathology and Radiology, Bruges, Belgium. Working with MediSpeech suits Doctor van den Berghe very well. “It not only considerably shortens the whole process of making case reports, but also makes it easy to process a dictation yourself. When something needs to be completed immediately, you can do it on the spot. This is of great benefit in urgent cases, but also a great help at weekends, or even during the week, particularly after 5 p.m. when the typing pool is closed.” Our secretaries save a lot of time Sint-Jan hospital, Pathology and Radiology, Bruges, Belgium. At the Sint-Jan hospital in Bruges Doctor Rigauts had decided to change over from VS4000 to MediSpeech. The 135,000 reports which are dictated there per year, are now converted by MediSpeech into text. Typing is no longer necessary, only sometimes the reports do need a bit of correcting. This means that the backlog has been drastically reduced and that secretaries have more time available to devote to other activities. We finish processing the weekend’s reports by Monday afternoon Sint Dimpna General Hospital, Radiology, Geel, Belgium. Doctor Franssens is extremely satisfied with MediSpeech. “Previously, people would go home on a Monday evening leaving a backlog of 100 reports that had built up over the weekend. Nowadays, since the implementation of MediSpeech all of the reports from the weekend will have been dealt with by early Monday afternoon. Given that 250 reports are normally processed per day, this makes quite a considerable difference.” Recognition is excellent and the product is easy to use Heilig-hart clinic, Radiology, Eeklo, Belgium Doctor Coolens uses MediSpeech in the radiology department of the Heilig-hart clinic in Eeklo. He was pleased to find that there is no more physical transport of tapes, and it is no longer necessary to search through cassettes to get the report needed. “What's more, this product works well: the recognition factor is high and the product is easy to use.” Currently there is no PACS system available, but if one becomes available, MediSpeech can be integrated into it. When that happens, the benefits of MediSpeech system will be even greater. Throughput time is now zero A.V. Dodoensziekenhuis, Radiology, Mechelen, Belgium Along with his two colleagues, Doctor Pilate deals with about 25,000 dictations per year, which they not only dictate themselves but also process. Because they do all of it themselves, no typists are required, the throughput time is nil and there is also no backlog. The greatest advantage is that no typing is required, and only minimal corrections need to be made to the text which has already been recognised by MediSpeech.
