Speech Recognition is the talk of the Pathology Lab
One of the leading hospitals in the West of Ireland, the renowned Galway Clinic, has become one of the first hospitals in Ireland and the UK to install speech recognition in it’s pathology department. The preferred software system – G2 Medispeech – is widely used in larger British and European hospitals, several on a hospital wide basis, but Galway Clinic is believed to be one of the first pathology labs to be equipped.
Six medical scientists and two pathologists are using the system which has a pathology-specific medical dictionary added to the vast lexicon of medical terms it recognises. Wireless headsets and waterproof foot controls make the system ideal for the environment of a busy pathology lab. James O’Sullivan of G2 Speech Ireland expects interest amongst other pathologists to be high, “when this system improves the efficiency and ease of working of a busy pathology lab in the way it has proven itself in other hospital departments – and early indications show it will – then we can expect to see many more pathology departments specifying this software in the months ahead”.
The G2 system of digital dictation seamlessly upgrades to Medispeech Speech Recognition which very quickly learns the voice, accent and intonations of its users, who can dictate using various means including a speechmike or a digital portable device. 98% accuracy is delivered creating huge benefits in patient experiences. According to James, G2 is one of the few investments that a hospital can make which makes vast differences to patient treatment times and yet delivers cost benefits.
