Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the medical sector, from diagnostics, to administration, to patient care. But as AI systems become more deeply embedded in healthcare operations, they can also introduce new risks – particularly when it comes to data security and patient privacy.

With sensitive medical information flowing through complex algorithms and cloud-based systems, it’s never been more important to safeguard this data.

In our article, we’ll explore how G2 Speech’s latest and greatest AI innovations are helping healthcare professionals provide quality patient care while shaving hours of administration time per week, and how our systems are built with complete security in mind.

How can G2 Speech deliver AI efficiencies for healthcare professionals?

With almost 30 years of experience revolutionising the medical reporting process, our speech recognition and AI solutions have consistently helped healthcare professionals reduce administrative burdens and reclaim valuable time for patient care.

Our solutions minimise manual data entry and enable medical specialists to dictate (which is 3x quicker than typing!) medical notes, and our technology has delivered measurable efficiencies across hospitals and practices.

Building on the knowledge, expertise and experience of our team, we have recently introduced ‘Aida’ – our latest AI innovation, designed to further boost productivity, improve accuracy and support clinicians in making faster, more informed decisions than ever before.

Introducing Aida – powerful AI technology that truly understands clinicians

Aida has been developed specifically for medical specialists to enrich clinical reporting, improve communication, enhance accuracy and boost patient care and engagement.

It works by utilising Large Language Models (LLM), neural networks, and deep learning technology to further automate medical documentation and empower clinicians to put their focus back on delivering great patient care.

We recently delivered a webinar ‘Re-Defining the Future of Healthcare’, which gives an exclusive demo of Aida, and gives more insight in how it can enrich the daily workflows of medical specialists.

Some of the key questions that arose were around security concerns and how our AI systems can ensure maximum data protection. Below is an overview of those questions and how these security concerns are handled.

Squashing security concerns in AI-driven healthcare

  1. What LLM is used? How is that managed?

We focus on open source and European players, and we’re constantly evaluating and investigating alternative LLMs to ensure that we use the most advanced solutions moving forward.

When using the AI functionality, the dictated text and commands are sent to the LLM and although data processing complies with all regulatory policies, we advise not to send patient demographics.

To safeguard sensitive information, G2 Speech implements stringent security and privacy measures when utilising LLMs. These measures are governed by our ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701 certified Information Security and Privacy Management System (ISMS and PIMS). Our key practices include minimising data processing to only what is necessary and employing secure data handling procedures.

We also emphasise the importance of users avoiding the input of Protected Health Information (PHI) to further protect patient data.

2. How do you ensure security and compliance within the platform?

We understand that any information that is recorded in a medical setting is highly sensitive so Aida has various measures in place to assure security.

Firstly, the processor only processes personal data under the controller’s documented instructions, and all personnel authorised to process personal data are bound by confidentiality obligations.

The security measures in place include:

  • Data encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256)
  • Role-based access control (RBAC) to restrict access
  • Regular security audits
  • ISO27001 Certification
  • Cyber Essentials Plus Certification

3. What happens to recorded information? Is it stored?

Aida is built with data security and patient privacy at its core. We do not store any recorded information, and none of the data processed is used to train or improve future models.

Once the audio input is processed, it is immediately discarded ensuring that no data is retained – this approach guarantees that all user interactions remain confidential.

As with all our innovations, we are committed to protecting the integrity and confidentiality of patient data. Purpose-built for medical specialists, Aida is designed with robust privacy protocols and advanced safeguards to ensure high standards of data protection.
